| The September 2 concerts at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m., will
feature guest conductor Alan Mitchell, trombonist of the band and
Andrews University Director of Wind Ensemble, and vocalist Michelle
Bythrow, who will be joined later in the program by city manager, Frank
Walsh for another number.
Director Dr. Donald Moely announced the concert begins with John Philip
Sousa’s Espirit De Corp March, which is followed by featuring Alan
Mitchell guest conducting "Pineapple Poll: (Suite from the Ballet),
by Sullivan and arranged by Charles Mackerrasa.
ALAN MITCHELL is an Assistant Professor of Music at Andrews
University. His teaching responsibilities include the Wind Symphony and
music education courses for the B.M. and M.M. in Music Education degrees.
Mr. Mitchell holds both a B.A. degree and M.A. degrees in Music from
California State University at Long Beach. He is currently a candidate for
a D.M.A. degree in Wind Conducting/Music Education at the University of
Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. His major conducting professors
were Eugene Corporon and Dr. Mallory Thompson. He has received additional
conducting studies from Michael Haithcock, Ron Johnson, John Whitwell, and
Allan McMurray.
Conductor Moely will then continue the concert by with "Praise God
From Whom All Blessings Flow," by Ed Huckaby.
Next the program features day’s guest vocalist, Michelle Bythrow in
singing excerpts from "Phantom of the Opera," by Andrew Lloyd
Webber. This will be followed with Michelle singing "Popular"
from the recent smash hit "Wicked."
MICHELLE BYTHROW was born and raised in Michiana, grew up on the
block where John Howard lived, went on to study music at Indiana
University, then toured with music missions across the U.S., into Canada,
and finally to Greenland. She was married to Brian Bythrow in 1991 and
moved to California where she began professional singing via the
Sacramento Opera Company. Michelle sang in professional musical theater in
Colorado and also began working in television commercials, film, print
work, and studio back-up vocals. After living for a period in Salt Lake
City, UT, today, she resides, with her husband and three children (Christy
Rose, Cody, and Cora), in Granger IN, where she is actively involved in
teacher music and is very active in her church music program. Michelle
started a jazz duo called "Sage" and performs for private
parties and in local restaurants. She leads music at her church and writes
original music for children and worship songs. Michelle has recently
worked on the set of "Everwood" and continues working in the
film industry doing commercials and industrials regionally and nationally.
Following this, the band performs a Percy Grainger folk song setting
for band "Ye Banks and Braes O Bonnie Doon." Next comes a Walter
Finnlayson march "Storn King."
Michelle Bythrow will then be joined by another guest vocalist,
City Manager, Frank Walsh, who will sing "God Bless
America." and will probably ask the audience to join along on the
last strain. The concert concludes with Sousa’s "Gladiator
March."
After the evening concert, the late night show "Big Band"
Concert begins at 9:00 p.m. and includes a big band version of
"The National Anthem" and a jazzy version of "Strike up the
Band." Many of the old favorites of the Big Band Era will be heard
along with featuring Chuck Steck, trumpet soloist of the band from
La Porte, IN, playing "I Remember Clifford," and Alto Saxophone
soloist and band manager Christopher Keech playing "My Foolish
Heart." The featured vocal soloist for the day, Michelle Bythrow,
will sing "Blue Skies." and "Nice Work if You Can Get
It."
The late night show "Big Band Concert concludes with perhaps the
most popular song of the Big Band Era, "In the Mood."
The concert Municipal Band returns for its final double concerts of the
season at the Band Shell on Labor Day, September 3.
