The St. Joseph Municipal Band continues the 2007
summer season with its normal set of double concerts on Sunday, July 8 at the
regular 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. times. The weekly summer concerts are held at the
John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph overlooked Lake Michigan.
The July 8 concerts, the 4th of 13 double concerts scheduled for the
season. Guest performers for the concerts this Sunday will be the Citadel
Dancers and Chicago trumpet player Williams Camp performing a trumpet solo with
the band.
Director Dr. Moely, announced the concert begins
with "The Eagle Squadron" march, by Kenneth Alford. This is followed
by trumpet soloist William Camp of Chicago performing "Concert Etude"
by Alexander Goedicke.
WILLIAM CAMP
enters his 23rd year as a traveling performer and guest soloist. Camp has
appeared with the Lake Forest Symphony, American Ballet Theater Orchestra,
Northwest Indiana Symphony, Kenosha Symphony, Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra
and the Symphonic Pops Orchestra of Chicago and now performs with Chicago
Classic Brass. He has performed in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria,
Belgium, and at La Scala, Italy. As a soloist Mr. Camp has appeared with The
Quad Cities Symphony, The Dallas Wind Symphony, Chicago Chamber Brass, Northwest
Indiana Symphony, and many other performing ensembles. Camp graduated from
Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and The University of Michigan and his
principal teachers include Gene Young, Louis Davidson, Armando Ghitalla and
Thomas Crown. This week Camp will be performing a solo, with the Band, called
"Concert Etude" , by A. Godeke. This year is the 30th year Camp has
performed with the St. Joseph Band.
The band then features music of Broadway, by
performing "Broadway Spectacular" arranged by John Higgins. The music
includes the selections of "Hello Dolly," What I Did For Love,"
"Sunrise, Sunset," "Tomorrow," and "Mame," The
band next features it’s entire clarinet section as they perform Clarinet
Polka, a Polish Folk Tune, arranged by David Bennett. This if followed by
Minuteman march by Robert Pearson.
Next will be a performance by the Citadel
Dancers. They will perform three dances: a Tap Dance,
choreographed by Lari Lawrence; a Ballet Duet choreographed by Ross McDowell to
music of Saint-Saens and a Hip Hop dance Hip Hop dance choreographed by Lari
Lawrence to music by Janet Jackson.
The Citadel Dancers performing are: Alissa Bailey, Lexi Barreiro, Anne
Brown, Caroline Richey, Molly Ross, Geena Seats, Caroline Spikner, Samantha
Young & Shelby Vasta, and Elizabeth Bowman (returned from college to join
the summer Citadel Dancers).
THE CITADEL DANCERS
is the performing company in the Benton Harbor Arts District. The Company, under
the direction of Eileen Cropley, represents the more advanced students and
currently has nine members ranging in age from twelve to sixteen - they are:
Alissa Bailey, Lexi Barreiro, Anne Brown, Caroline Richey, Molly Ross, Geena
Seats, Caroline Spikner, Samantha Young & Shelby Vasta.
In addition, a
former member of the company, Elizabeth Bowman, has returned from college and
will perform with the company during her summer vacation. The Citadel Dance
Center and Company is a not-for-profit 501©)(3) organization which can offer
need-based scholarships to qualifying students.
Next the band turns to some of the most popular
music of Leroy Anderson in performing "A Leroy Anderson Portrait, arranged
by James Barnes. The selection contains the music of "Serenata,"
"The Syncopated Clock," Blue Tango," and "Bugler’s
Holiday." To mark the 100 anniversary of the birth of popular composer
Leroy Anderson.
The concert concludes with a symphonic march
commissioned by a national music fraternity ‘Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.’ The
march is "The Sinfonians," by Clifton Williams.
The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John
E. N. Howard band shell are free to the public and held each Sunday at 3:30
& 7:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday, September 2 and conclude with the
final set of concerts Monday, September 3, Labor Day.
