SUNDAY, JULY 22 CONCERTS @ 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.
The St. Joseph Municipal Band continues the 2007 summer
season with its normal set of double concerts on Sunday, July 22 at the
regular 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. times. The weekly summer concerts are held at
the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph overlooking Lake
Michigan. The July 22 weekend concerts are the 6th of 13 double concerts
scheduled for the season. Director Dr. Donald Moely announced this
week’s fare will include a guest performance by the "Lighthouse
Men’s Barbershop Chorus." The concert also includes music to
celebrate the St. Joseph "Venetian Festival."
The concert begins with, "Burnished Brass Concert
March," composed by John Cacavas. The band then answers one of it’s
many requests in performing the Richard Rodgers "Victory at
Sea." Next the band plays the theme song of the NBC’s evening news
"The Mission," written by John Williams.
The special entertainment for the concert is THE
LIGHTHOUSE CHORUS, which is Michiana’s premiere men’s a cappella music
group. It’s members include past District competitors and medal winners,
experienced singers with more than 50 years of barber-shopping, and
members who have been singing with the group for less than a year. They
come from as far away as Edwardsburg, Watervliet, Three Oaks, and St.
Joseph, all enjoying together the creation of the complex harmonies for
which barbershop a cappella style music is known. On October 7, 2006, they
celebrated their 7th anniversary. They represented the Pioneer
District in the Small Chorus Contest in 2004, and are currently working to
qualify to sing next summer at the Barbershop Society International
Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. This summer they are performing in
Dowagiac, New Carlisle, South Bend, Berrien Springs (at the Berrien County
Youth Fair), and in Portage. They currently meet at Galien High School in
the band room Thursday nights from 7 P.M. to 10 p.m. They invite any
interested singer to come and join them! For more information on how to
attend a practice, please call the music director, Gene Hanover, at
269-465-4428, or our vice president of membership, Tom Sackett, at
269-978-6565.
The band next performs "Fantasy on American Sailing
Songs," by Claire Grundman. A lighter piece is then offered in
"Disco-Tech," by Bob Lowden. The concert concludes with "Crosley
March" by Henry Fillmore.
The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E. N.
Howard band shell in down town St. Joseph overlooking the St. Joseph River
and the shores of Lake Michigan, are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30
p.m. and continue through, September 2, concluding with the final set of
concerts Monday, September 3, Labor Day.
