| The August 19 concert represents the 10th of 13
concerts performed at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the John E. N. Howard Band
Shell in downtown St. Joseph.
This concert was rained out. Guest artist were asked to
return for the Aug 26th concert.
Director Dr. Donald Moely announced the concert begins John Philip
Sousa’s "Solid Men To The Front." This is followed by
"From Whom All Blessings Flow, arranged by Ed Huckeby.
The band then features the flute section by having it perform two
selections as a flute choir:
"Londonderry Air" arranged by Ricky Lombardo, and
"Scherzo" by Arthur Severn. The flute section of the band then
perform "Flutes Four" a special piece featuring the band’s
flute section by Arthur Frackenpohl.
THE FLUTES:
Denall Miller, of Sodus has been playing the flute for 30 years.
Her primary teachers were Charlotte Wuepper of St. Joseph and Ruth Bylsma
of Grand Rapids. Before becoming a stay at home and Home Schooling mom,
Mrs. Miller taught elementary music. Besides home schooling and performing
with the St. Joseph Municipal band, some of Mrs. Miller’s other musical
activities include flute repair, teaching private flute lessons at her
home and for the arts and education program at the Salvation Army. She is
also a regular participant in the worship services at her church. Mrs.
Miller resides in Sodus with her husband and two children. This is her 24th
season with the St. Joseph Municipal Band.
Charlotte Burch has been a member of the St. Joe Municipal Band
for fourteen years. She is a native of central Ohio and attended Ohio
State University. Charlotte currently resides in Bridgman and is VP/CFO
for St. Joe communications firm, Perry Ballard Incorporated. She plays
flute and piccolo in various ensembles and is also a member of Southshore
Concert Band.
Jan Street is a first grade teacher in Benton Harbor at the
Creative Arts/Gifted and Talented Academy. She has a minor in music and is
certified to teach music through 9th grade. Jan is the woodwind instructor
for the Berrien Springs High School Marching Band and has taught private
lessons. She has played with the Southshore Concert Band for 13 years and
Lake Effect Winds woodwind quintet for 8 years. She has done solo and
small ensemble work for church services, weddings, and musical theatre.
Nancy Pollyea, 42 year member of the St. Joseph Municipal Band
is a former private piccolo teacher and former librarian of the band. She
was also a 14 year member of SW Michigan Symphony and used to play in a
band at the House of David. Currently she is an educator of computer
programs to all entering and existing associates (doctors, nurses,
executive secretaries, unit clerks, technicians, etc.) at Lakeland
Regional Health System in St. Joseph.
Penny Kohns, coordinated the flute section to plan for this
performance. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Spring Arbor
College and a Master of Music degree from University of
Massachusetts-Lowell under Iva Milch (Boston Ballet, Boston Pops) both in
Flute Performance. After graduation, Penny performed with the Nashua Flute
Choir in New Hampshire. The Nashua Flute Choir performed at two National
Flute Conventions and recorded two CD's. Currently, Penny is flute faculty
at: Crescendo Academy of Music in Kalamazoo, Salvation Army in Benton
Harbor, as well as her home studio in St. Joseph.
The band then turns to one of the most famous marches of Walter
Finlayson entitled "Storm King."
Featured guest vocalist Patrick Ross is featured next with the
band singing "Gershwin in Concert." Mr. Ross will then sing
"Ya Got Trouble" from ‘The Music Man’; "Bog to the
Top" from Disney’s ‘High School Musical,’ and "This is the
Moment" from Jeklyl and Hyde.
PATRICK ROSS, a native of St. Joseph, is a senior at Michigan
Lutheran High School. His love for singing began at a young age when he
started performing in musicals with Doug Fordyce Productions. His credits
with Doug Fordyce include Star-to-Be in "Annie," Sky Masterson
in "Guys and Dolls," and Joseph in "Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dream Coat." This past year he played the part of
Professor Harold Hill in "The Music Man" at Michigan Lutheran,
and he also played Troy Bolton in Disney’s "High School
Musical" with the Children’s Music Workshop. He has just returned
from Interlochen Fine Arts Camp where he played the role of Prez in the
musical "The Pajama Game," as well as being the understudy for
the lead role of Sid Sorokin. He received the Maddy Award for excellence
in musical theatre while at camp. In addition to performing in musicals,
Patrick has also competed in several talent competitions, and sung in
concerts in our area including the Berrien County Youth Fair Talent Show,
the Voice of Choice singing contest, and he has sung with the Southwest
Michigan Symphony Orchestra. Patrick is a member of Michigan Lutheran’s
varsity basketball team, choir, band, student council, and drama
department. He also enjoys playing the piano and trumpet. He gives many
thanks to God for all his blessings, and to his family and friends for all
of their tremendous support and care.
The concert concludes by answering a request for "Barnum &
Bailey’s Favorite," by Karl King.
Dr Moely indicated the hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E.
N. Howard band shell are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and
continue through Sunday, September 2, followed by the 9:00 p.m. ‘Big
Band’ concert. The season then concludes with the final set of concerts
Monday, September 3, Labor Day.
