| The August 26 concerts scheduled for 3:30
and 7:30 p.m. will be the 11th of 13 double concerts scheduled
for the 2007 season of the St. Joseph Municipal Band at the John E. N.
Howard band shell in downtown St. Joseph.
Director Dr. Donald Moely
announced the concert features guest vocalist Patrick Ross, the Municipal
Band Flute Choir, and Jonathan Korzun guest conducting a
number. Moely announced the Silver Beach Carousel Society will unveil two
newly created figures for the proposed new Carousel at Silver Beech.
The concert begins one of Sousa’s World War I era
marches considered by experperts to be one of his best, "Solid Men to
the Front."
This is followed by Jonathan Korzun, who comes forward
from the trombone section to conduct Clifton Williams "Symphonic
Dance No. 3 "Fiesta".
DR. JONATHAN KORZUN is beginning his 17th year at Southwestern
Michigan College where he serves as Director of Bands and Instructor of
Music Theory. His duties include conducting the Symphonic Band, Brass Band
and Jazz Ensemble and teaching the four semester sequence of Music Theory
classes. Dr. Korzun received his B.A. (with high honors, Phi Beta Kappa)
in Music Education and M.A. in Music Theory/Composition from Rutgers
University (New Jersey), and his Ed.D. in Music Education from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A music educator with over 25
years experience, Dr. Korzun's previous experience includes Associate
Director of Bands at Rutgers University, instructor of conducting at the
University of Illinois, and positions as band and choir director in the
New Jersey public schools. He is active as a trombone player, and guest
conductor. He is a member of the St. Joseph Municipal Band and Lake Effect
Jazz Big Band. Dr. Korzun frequently serves as a clinician with area
school music programs. He also has extensive experience as music director
and conductor of musical theater productions with over three dozen shows
to his credit. Dr. Korzun resides in Dowagiac with his wife, Donna.
Next the band features it’s flute choir composed of
the band’s flute section. They will perform Londonderry Air, arranged by
Ricky Lombardo, and "Scherzo" by Arthur Severn.
Denall Miller, of Sodus has been playing the flute for 30 years.
Her primary teachers were Charlotte Wuepper of St. Joseph and Ruth Bylsma
of Grand Rapids. Denall teaches private flute lessons at her home and for
the arts and education program at the Salvation Army. This is her 24th
season with the St. Joseph Municipal Band.
Charlotte Burch is a native of central Ohio and attended Ohio State
University. Charlotte currently resides in Bridgman and is VP/CFO for St.
Joe communications firm, Perry Ballard Incorporated. She plays flute and
piccolo in various ensembles and is also a member of the Southshore
Concert Band, and has been a member of the St. Joe Municipal Band for
fourteen years.
Jan Street is a first grade teacher in Benton Harbor at
the Creative Arts/Gifted and Talented Academy. She has a minor in music
and is a woodwind instructor for the Berrien Springs High School Marching
Band and has taught private lessons. She has played with the Southshore
Concert Band for 13 years and Lake Effect Winds woodwind quintet for 8
years and 11 years in the St. Joseph Municipal Band..
Nancy Pollyea, is a former private piccolo teacher and was also a 14
year member of the SW Michigan Symphony and performed in a band at the
House of David. Currently she is an educator of computer programs to all
entering and existing associates at Lakeland Regional Health System in St.
Joseph. This is her 42nd year as a member of the the St. Joseph
Municipal Band.
Penny Kohns, coordinated the flute section to plan for this
performance. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Spring Arbor
College and a Master of Music degree from University of
Massachusetts-Lowell under Iva Milch (Boston Ballet, Boston Pops) both in
Flute Performance. After graduation, Penny performed with the Nashua Flute
Choir in New Hampshire. The Nashua Flute Choir performed at two National
Flute Conventions and recorded two CD's. Currently, Penny is flute faculty
at: Crescendo Academy of Music in Kalamazoo, Salvation Army in Benton
Harbor, as well as her home studio in St. Joseph. Penny has performed with
the St. Joseph Municipal Band for 2 years.
The band next answers a request for
"Conquest," by Alfred Newman, arr. David Bennett.
The program next introduces it’s featured guest
vocalist for the concert, Patrick Ross, who will sing "You Got
Trouble" from the musical ‘The Music Man.’ Patrick then will be
joined by his sister Molly Ross who will do a Tango Duet "Bob to the
Top" from Disney’s ‘High School Musical,’ The band next
accompanies Patrick in "Gershwin in Concert," which will be
followed by "This is the Moment" from the musical ‘Jekyll and
Hyde.’
PATRICK ROSS, a native of St. Joseph, is a senior at
Michigan Lutheran High School. His love for singing began at a young age
when he started performing in musicals with Doug Fordyce Productions. His
credits with Doug Fordyce include Star-to-Be in "Annie," Sky
Masterson in "Guys and Dolls," and Joseph in "Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat." This past year he played the
part of Professor Harold Hill in "The Music Man" at Michigan
Lutheran, and he also played Troy Bolton in Disney’s "High School
Musical" with the Children’s Music Workshop. He has just returned
from Interlochen Fine Arts Camp where he played the role of Prez in the
musical "The Pajama Game," as well as being the understudy for
the lead role of Sid Sorokin. He received the Maddy Award for excellence
in musical theatre while at camp. In addition to performing in musicals,
Patrick has also competed in several talent competitions, and sung in
concerts in our area including the Berrien County Youth Fair Talent Show,
the Voice of Choice singing contest, and he has sung with the Southwest
Michigan Symphony Orchestra. Patrick is a member of Michigan Lutheran’s
varsity basketball team, choir, band, student council, and drama
department. He also enjoys playing the piano and trumpet.
The next composition will be "Carousel," which
will be played after a special presentation by Suz Schalon, president of
the St. Joseph Carousel Society. Ms. Schalon will unveil two carousel
horses will be unveiled at this August 26 concert. They are two new
figures that will be part of the proposed new Silver Beech Carousel being
planned.
Two more beautifully hand-carved and painted carousel
horses will be unveiled at the St. Joseph Municipal Band Concerts on
August 26. The first public viewing of these figures will be the
"finale" to the Carousel Organ Association of America’s rally
from August 24 to 26 on the bluff in St. Joseph.
Carousel Works of Mansfield, Ohio created the horses as
part of the new Silver Beach Carousel planned to be open in the fall of
2008 below the bluff. The 50’ carousel deck will feature 26 horses and
22 unique figures in addition to two chariots, one of which is
handicap-accessible.
One horse is painted with "pinto" brown and
white coloring and traditional western trappings. These include a brightly
striped blanket under the brown saddle detailed to resemble leather
tooling. A canteen, fringed leather gun holster, and lariat complete this
galloping steed with flying mane.
The second horse is a deep golden palomino with white
socks and mane complemented with black, teal and gold Egyptian trappings.
The sphinx carvings and large, elaborately detailed sword combine to give
this figure an outstanding appearance.
The Egyptian horse has been sponsored but the Western
horse is still available. Currently 36 of the 48 figures have been
selected for sponsorships along with both chariots. Two figures of local
interest, the St. Joseph Bear and the Benton Harbor Tiger, are available
along with the remaining horse and animal figures.
After the concerts the horses will be on display with 12
additional finished carousel figures in the Silver Beach Museum through
September 30th. The museum is open 10:00 am to 8:00 pm daily
through Labor Day, and every weekend in September. After closing all
museum items will be removed in preparation for construction of the new
carousel building as part of the development planned below the bluff on
property owned by Silver Beach Memories, LLC, formed by Ed and Marcie
Schalon and Lou and the late Warren Gast.
The concert concludes answering another request by
playing "Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite" by Karl King.
The weekly double concerts are part of the 2007 summer
series which the band
performs each Sunday through September 2 and then
concludes with concerts on
Labor Day, September 3.
