The St. Joseph Municipal Band concerts of August 12, 2007 represents the 9th of 13 double concerts planned at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph for the 2007 season.

Director Dr. Donald Moely, announced the concert begins with a Sousa march "The Pathfinder of Panama" by John Philip Sousa. This will be followed by a trombone solo by Gary Cooper, principal trombonist of the band. Gary will perform "Allegro Spiritoso," by Jean Bapiste Senaille, arr. Jerry Lackey.

 

GARY A. COOPER attended Lake Michigan College, Indiana University at South Bend, and the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. He has studied Trombone with Arnold Jacobs, Edward Klienhammer, Jay Friedman and Charles Vernon and has studied Voice with Margret Hillis and Thomas Hardy. Cooper has sung with the Chicago Symphony Chorus and has performed solo roles in Mahler's Eighth Symphony, Boris Godunov by Mussorsky, and Moses und Aaron by Arnold Schoenberg. He has worked under the direction of Sir George Solti, James Levine, Claudio Abbado and Margaret Hillis. He has performed as a soloist with the Southwestern Michigan Symphony, Elkhart Symphony as well as many ensembles throughout England and Europe. Gary Cooper is Artist in Residence in the St. Joseph Schools. He also teaches at Arts Center for the Salvation Army and teaches privately. He continues to perform as a Vocalist and Principal Trombonist with the St. Joseph Municipal Band and plays Principal Trombone in the Southwest Michigan Symphony and the Whiting Park Festival Orchestra. He performs with Opus Nine, a professional Renaissance Choral Sextet, and North American Brass Company. He is active as a clinician and soloist in the Midwest area.

The band next turns to selections from a 1998 Movie "The Mask of Zorro," by James Horner, arranged for band by John Moss. This is followed by guest vocalist Haley Frey performing "Hopelessly Devoted" from the movie ‘Grease,’ followed by her performance of selections from Carousel, by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.

HALEY FREY is a recent graduate of St. Joseph High School. During her four years at SJHS, she was very active in music; both instrumental and vocal. During her time in the St. Joe Marching Band, Hayley marched trumpet, was a member of the color guard for two years, and served as a Drum Major her senior year. As a choir student, Hayley participated in Vocal Solo & Ensemble Festival for four years, earning first and second division ratings at both District and State levels. For two consecutive years, she was selected for the Regional and State Honors Choirs. As a senior, Hayley was also selected to perform in the All-State Choir with the top 120 high school singers in Michigan. The All-State Choir performed at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival in May and Hayley was given the honor of singing a solo in the concert. As a student at SJHS, she was also a four-year member of the Show Choir, serving as student director for two years; very active in musical productions, having a lead role in "Guys & Dolls" in 2005 and a principal role in "Beauty and the Beast" in 2006; and participated in the Variety Show for all four years. Hayley is also known around town for singing the national Anthem at high school sporting events, and recently sang for the South Bend Silver Hawks at Coveleski Stadium. In the fall, Hayley will attend Michigan State University to study psychology or music.

The band then plays Flash of Crimson March, by Walter Finlayson, which is followed by a number featuring the Sax section "Sax Serenade" by Ira P. Schwarz. The Saxophones of the band are Christopher Keech, of St. Joseph, on Alto Saxophone who is section leader and band manager. Daniel Worthington, of St. Josephy is 2nd Alto Saxophone, Steven Schadler, of St. Joseph is Tenor Saxophone and band manager of the band, and Richard Bressler, of Dowagiac plays the Baritone Saxophone.

After this number, the band salutes the passing this summer of a famous saxophone player "Boots’ Randolp who popularized a famous Saxopyhone piece called "Yakety Sax" which the band will play.

The band then performs "A Tribute to Jerome Kern" by Jerome Kern and arranged for band by Warren Barker, and in conclusion answers a request for "The Crosely March," which is the fight song of Benton Harbor High School.

The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E. N. Howard band shell are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday, September 2 and conclude with the final set of concerts Monday, September 3, Labor Day.
