SUNDAY, JULY 25 CONCERTS @ 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The St. Joseph Municipal Band continues the 2004 summer season with its normal set of double concerts on Sunday, July 25 at the regular 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. The weekly summer concerts are held at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph overlooked Lake Michigan. The July 25 concerts, the 6th of 12 double concerts scheduled for the season, will feature the Michiana Metro Lighthouse Chorus performing at the concerts for their third time.

Also included in each week of the 2004 Concert series will be an update of the donations for the half million dollar John E.N. Howard Band Shell Renovation project announced for this summer, with the reading of names of this week’s donations.

Director Dr. Donald Moely, announced the concert begins with a Sousa march, "The Black Horse Troop," followed by "A Jubilant Overture" by Alfred Reed. The band then performs "Relax Rumba," by Paul Yoder which features some of the more unique instruments of the band including oboes, bassoons, bass clarinets and Latin percussion instruments.

The guests for the concert providing entertainment next are THE MICHIANA METRO LIGHTHOUSE CHORUS which is the area’s top ranked barbershop singing organization. They began singing in 1999 and under the direction of Gene Hanover, have the status of the Top Ranked Small Barbershop Chorus in the Pioneer (Michigan) District of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc., the worlds largest all male singing society. This earned them an invitation to perform at the Buckeye Invitation Chorus Contest in Columbus, Ohio this August where they will compete against other choruses of their size from all over the USA and Canada. In April of this year they achieved the rank of third over all against nineteen other choruses from all over Michigan coming up from tenth just a year earlier.

They are proud to be very active with the youth in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan having quartets sing in schools. They help getting children involved in school vocal programs and the Lighthouse Chorus also provides school music programs with coaching and music for their boys and girls barbershop quartets. They also provide help with vocal workshops within the church community of the greater Michiana Metro area. For more information look them up on the web at: www.lighthousechorus.org. This is their third appearance here at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell.

The chorus will perform a varied program including:

"Let Freedom Ring," "Meet Me in Rosetime Rosie," "Who’ll Take My Place," "Shine/This Little Light/Do Lord," "Irish Blessing," and "America the Beautiful Overlay."

The band then answers a request for a popular march in Europe, "The Radetsky March," by Johann Strauss. The concert concludes with "Film Score Classics," arranged by Jay Bocook. The setting includes "Warner Bros. Movie Fanfare," "As Time Goes By," and ‘Tara Theme’ from "Gone with the Wind."

The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E. N. Howard band shell are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday, September 5 and conclude with the final set of concerts Monday, September 6, Labor Day.
