The St. Joseph Municipal Band continues the 2004 summer season with its normal set of double concerts on Sunday, August 8th, at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. The weekly summer concerts are held at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph overlooked Lake Michigan. The August 8th concerts, the 7th of 12 double concerts scheduled for the season, will feature the comedy music group, “The Misfits” Also included in each week of the 2004 Concert series will be an update of the donations for the half million dollar John E. N. Howard Band Shell Renovation project announced for this summer, including the reading of names of this week’s donations. Director Dr. Donald Moely announced the concert begins with “Marquette March” by John Philip Sousa. This march resulted in Sousa’s appreciation for Marquette University awarding Sousa an honorary Doctor of Music degree on November 16, 1923, in appreciation of what Sousa had done for his country in both peace and war. This was the first honorary Doctorate ever awarded by the University. The band then turns to an updated arrangement by Mark Williams entitled “Fantasy on ‘Yankee Doodle.’ Some of the memorable tunes from Hollywood are then heard in Warren Barker’s arrangement of “Hooray for Hollywood.” Tunes included are: “Forty Second Street,” “Born Free,” “The High and the Mighty,” “A Summer Place,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” and “Lawrence of Arabia.” The entertainment feature for the concert is a performance of the “The Misfits,” which is a comedy chorus directed by Joan Nozicka. This group of 33 recreational singers was formed in May of 1965 with 12 singers. This was a sing-a-long group at the St. Joseph/Lincoln Senior Center, which enjoyed music and decided to go to local nursing homes to entertain the residents. To ‘cheer up’ the residents, they decided to do musical comedy and design their own ‘silly’ costumes. This year their theme is “The Different Styles of Music” where they sing oldies-but-goodies that were recorded by famous vocalists over the years. Now in their tenth year, they have performed over 470 programs before various groups and organizations. Their travels have taken them to parts of Southwestern Michigan as well as Northern Indiana. In 1997 they traveled to Branson, Missouri, for a performance. Nozicka, now retired, had taught piano and organ privately for many years. With her musical background, she is able to select and arrange the music that the group performs. She pre-records the accompanying music that is used for each performance. The group’s program is entitled “Different Styles of Music” and includes: “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Penna. 6–5000,” ”Rock & Roll Waltz, “Temptation,” “Blue Hawaii, “ and “God Bless the U.S.A.” Members of the groups are: Janet Bednar, Millie Carney, Delores Frantz, Esther Hahne, Donna Johnson, Polly Judd, Joanne Parrish, Josephine Perry, Lila Roethel, Cathy Sherwood, Alice Williams, Vera Zwar, Louis Arent, John Bednar, Betty Bohm, Bill Carney, Warren Hahn, Charles Lillie, Peggy Platts, Nick Rose, Harry Sherwood, Scott Sherwood, Lou Vogl, Bob Brockett, Mildred Brown Nancy Campau, Sally Cheek, Darlene Freer, Imelda Knowles, Fran Ray, Leona Rose, Betty Ross, Betty Rothenberg The band then performs “Big Band Bash,” arranged by Bob Lowden, which features “Artistry in Rhythm,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “Take the A Train,” and “One o’clock Jump.” The concert concludes with a Russell Alexander march “Colossus of Columbia.” The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E. N. Howard band shell are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday, September 5 and conclude with the final set of concerts Monday, September 6, Labor Day.
