SUNDAY, August 29 CONCERTS @ 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.The August 29 concert represents the 10th of 12 concerts planned at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph for the 2004 season. Also included in each week of the 2004 Concert series will be an update of the donations for the half million dollar John E. N. Howard Band Shell Renovation project announced for this summer. The current week’s donations will be read at the concert. Director Dr. Donald Moely announced the concert begins with ‘The Observing Visitor" march by John Philip Sousa. Dr. Moely said the band will dedicate this to the many visitors from around the country and around the world that come to our concerts during the season each summer. Next the band performs an expressive piece called "To the Summit," by Robert W. Smith, subtitled "Strive for the Highest." which will be a tribute to the world Summer Olympics in Athens. This is then contrasted by "Color Burst March" by George Kenny. The band then performs "Salute to Bob Hope," a piece that was scheduled for the Labor Day 2003 concerts soon after the death of Bob Hope. Since both of the Labor Day 2003 concerts were rained out, the band has rescheduled this tribute to the memory of Bob Hope. Programmed next is a fast march "Pas Redouble" by Saint Sean, arranged by Frachenpohl, followed by the an arrangement by Leroy Anderson of "76 Trombones," from Meredith Willson’s "The Music Man." The band then plays a meditative treatment of the folk song "Amazing Grace," by Frank Tichelli. The concert concludes with a well-known Sousa march "The Thunderer." The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E. N. Howard band shell are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday, September 5, followed by the 9:00 p.m. ‘Big Band’ concert, and conclude with the final set of concerts Monday, September 6, Labor Day.
