SUNDAY, AUGUST 15 CONCERTS @ 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The St. Joseph Municipal Band continues the 2004 summer season with its normal set of double concerts on Sunday, August 15th, at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.  The weekly summer concerts are held at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph overlooked Lake Michigan.  The August 15th concerts, the 8th of 12 double concerts scheduled for the season, will feature The Municipal Band Brass Quintet, a guest conductor, and answer a vocal request.

An update of the donations for the half million dollar John E. N. Howard Band Shell Renovation project will be presented during the concert.

Director Dr. Donald Moely, announced the concert begins featuring a guest conductor from the trombone section, Jonathan Korzun, who conducts Sousa’s “The Gallant Seventh” march, which begins the concert.  Korzun then directs “Olympic Fanfare and Theme” by John Williams, followed by another Sousa march “U.S. Field Artillery.” 

Dr. Jonathan Korzun is Director of Bands and Chairman of Fine and Performing Arts at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, Michigan..  He directs the Symphonic Band, Brass Band and Jazz Ensemble.  An outgrowth of the S.M.C. Community Brass Band, Dr. Korzun founded and directs the Round Oak Cornet Band, a small brass band that performs nineteenth century American Brass band music on authentic mid nineteenth century instruments.  Dr. Korzun received his B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Music Theory/Composition from Rutgers University (New Jersey), and his Ed. D in Music Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.  He is active as a trombone player, clinician and guest conductor

Dr. Moely then returns to conduct vocal soloist Gary Cooper who answers a request to sing and play trombone in his rendition of “How Great Thou Art.”

Next the concert features a performance of “The Municipal Band Brass Quintet,” coordinated by Bill Camp, trumpet performer in the Band.  Other members of the quintet include Jay Crouch, trumpet; Deb Durham, French horn; Gary Cooper, Trombone, and Bob Rusk, Tuba.  Their performance will include excerpts from ‘Carmen.’   The movements include ‘Les Dragons,’ ‘Seguidilla,’ ‘Habanera,’ ‘Aragonaise,’ ‘Intermezzo,’ and ‘Les Toreadors.’

Next the band performs “Space and Beyond.” arranged by John Moss.  This is followed by a set of pieces arranged by Percy A. Granger, “Irish Tune from County Derry,” and ‘Shepherd’s Hay.”

This is followed by the concluding number for the concert “Lola Flores” by Alfred Sadel, arranged by John Krance. 

The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E. N. Howard band shell are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday, September 5 and conclude with the final set of concerts Monday, September 6, Labor Day.
