SUNDAY, JULY 20 CONCERTS @ 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The St. Joseph Municipal Band continues 2003 summer concert series with concerts on Sunday, July 20 at the normal 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph overlooked Lake Michigan.

Director Dr. Moely indicated that this week’s concerts will begin with a tribute to the 25th Venetian Festival of St. Joseph by beginning with a Sousa march entitled "Glory of the Yankee Navy." This if followed by a popular Overture, "Light Cavalry," by Franz Von Suppe."

An O. R. Farrar march entitled "Sky Patrol," is hear next followed by another piece motivated by the sea, called "Fantasy on a Sea Chanty,’ which features the keyboard players of the percussion section.

The special entertainment featured in the concert will be "The Misfits."

The misfits is a comedy chorus directed by Joan Nozicka. This group of 33 recreational singers was formed in May of 1995 with 12 singers. This was a sing–along group at the St. Joseph/Lincoln Senior Center, who enjoyed music and decided to go to local nursing homes to entertain the residents. To "cheer up " the residents, they decided to do musical comedy and design their own "silly" costumes. This year their theme is "Our Hit Parade" where they sing oldies-but-goodies that were recorded by famous vocalists over the years. Now in their ninth year, they have performed over 400 programs before various groups and organizations. Their travels have taken them to parts of Southwestern Michigan as well as Northern Indiana. In 1997 they traveled to Branson, Missouri, for a performance. Nozicka, now retired, had taught piano and organ privately for many years. With her musical background, she is able to select and arrange the music that the group performs. She pre-records the accompanying music that is used for each performance.

Their program will consist of:

  1. I’ve Got the Sun in the Morning

  2. Ma, She’s Making Eyes at Me

  3. I’m An Old Cowhand

  4. Music, Music, Music

  5. Bikini/Macho Man

  6. My Land/God Bless America

Members of the group include: Janet Bednar, Millie Carney, Delores Frantz, Esther Hahne, donna, Johnson, Polly Judd Joanne Parrish, Josephine Perry, Lila Roethel, Cathy Csherwood, Alice Williams, Vera Zwar, Louis Arent, John Bednar, Betty Bohm. Bill Carney, Warren Hahn, Charles Lillie, Peggy Platts, Nick Roose, Harry Sherwood, Scott Sherwood, Lou Vogl, Mildred Brown, Nancy Campau, Sally Check, Darlene Freer, Imelda Knowles, Fran Ray, Leona Rose, Betty Ross, Betty Rothenberg.

The band program continues with George Gershwin’s "An American in Paris." arr. John Krance. Dr. Moely suggests the work is alive with dazzle of robust activity, which typifies St. Joseph during the Venetian festival.

The concert then slows down to feature the clarinets in a smooth and beautiful melody "Vocalise" by Serge Rachmaninoff, arranged to be a feature of the clarinets section, which performs the beautiful melody.

The Venetian Week concerts ends with a famous march of John Philip Sousa entitled "The Bride Elect March."

The concerts are each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and last about one hour. The band is in the part of their season with concerts each Sunday until August 31, and then the season concludes with Monday, September 1, labor day concerts, which conclude the season. There is no admission for the concerts.
