The St. Joseph Municipal Band begins its second half of the 2003 summer concert series with its seventh set of double concerts on Sunday, August 3at the normal 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph overlooked Lake Michigan. Dr. Donald Moely indicated that this week’s concerts feature three members of a family who have together given 81 years of service to the St. Joseph Municipal Band. The concert will also highlight The Municipal Band Woodwind Quintet, along with a number featuring the bassoon section of the band. The concert begins with a Sousa March "The Charleton." The band then begins with Stacie Detgen, a 24 year member of the band who will be a guest director of "Immortal!! Invisible!" by Holtgren. Miss Detgen who is also principal French horn of the band will then conduct a "Disney March Spectacular," arranged by Ricketts. The bassoon section consisting of Paul Goodman, of Bridgman; Lisa Bubar, of St. Joseph, and Darla Crawford, of Coloma will be featured in "Bassoonata," by David Bennett. Next will be a mother daughter combination where Dixie Detgen conducts the band in accompanying daughter Stacie Detgen, in a French horn solo of "Allegro Spirituoso," by Senalle, arranged by Jerry Lackey, principal tuba of the band. This will be followed by a french horn duet featuring Dixie Detgen conducting the band accompanying both her daughters, Stacie and Kristie Detgen, of the French horn section of the band, in "Concert Piece," by Franz, arranged by Sanson. Next the band features a Woodwind Quintet composed of Charlotte Burch, flute, Dixie Detgen, Oboe, Dr. David Ratijik, Clarinet, Stacie Dudgeon, French Horn, and Lisa Bubar, Bassoon. They will perform: Pavanne (from American Symphonette, by Gould, arranged by Sheldon; Gagliara (from Ancient Airs and Dances), by Respighi, arranged by Lesnick, and "The Pink Panther, by Mancini, arranged by Christiansen. The band next is guest conducted by Dixie Detgen, who will conduct a recently discovered march of Leroy Anderson, entitled "The Governor’s March." Mrs. Detgen then conducts "Lest We Forget," by Swearingen, which will feature a special poem narration by Kristie Detgen, who is an eight year veteran of the U. S. Army. The concert concludes with director Dr. Moely conducting "Royal Welch Fusilliers March" by John Philip Sousa. The concerts are each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and last about one hour. The band is in the part of their season with concerts each Sunday until August 31, and then the season concludes with Monday, September 1, labor day concerts. There is no admission for the concerts.
