"Sally Stine, vocalist and trumpet and clarinet soloists featured with Municipal Band" Director of the St. Joseph Municipal Band, Dr. Donald Moely, indicated the band concerts scheduled for Sunday, August 4 will feature local vocalist Sally Stine singing some familiar songs, Craig Heitger, Principal trumpet of the band in a solo and Dr. David Ratajik on a clarinet solo with the band. The concert begins with a favorite Sousa march written in 1896, his "El Capitan." the march that was highlighted in perhaps the most popular of Sousa’s 15 operettas he wrote. Next, the band does "Overture for Winds" by Charles Carter. The first soloist featured is Craig Heitger, trumpeter from South Bend. Craig Heitger, received his Bachelor’s and Masters degrees in Trumpet Performance at Indiana University, Bloomington and South Bend. His primary trumpet instructors were: William Adam, Bloomington, Indiana; William Scarlett, of the Chicago Symphony. Mr. Heitger is principal trumpet of the Elkhart Symphony Orchestra. He plays in area orchestras, bands, churches, and has lead the Symphony Brass Quintet for nearly 30 years. Craig teaches private trumpet lessons for Bethel College, Indiana University South Bend, St. Mary’s College and in several public schools in the Michiana area. He has enjoyed playing in this band for nearly 30 years and performed with the band at the previous band shell site, before 1970. He will perform "Soliloquy For Trumpet" by John J. Morrissey. The band then turns to answering a request "Begin the Beguine," a famous Cole Porter tune arranged by John Krance. Vocalist Sally Stine is the special feature of the program Sally Stine was born and raised in St. Joseph and currently lives in Bridgman. She has been performing locally for more than 30 years, and is probably best known as a "wedding vocalist". She has also performed in many area restaurants, pageants, programs and fundraisers. Sally performs a wide variety of easy-listening music from country and gospel, to classic tunes. She will be singing several familiar songs, including: "At Last", "I Hope You Dance" , "For All the World". She then joins with the band in "The Way We Were" written by Marvin Hamlisch and arranged by principal tuba of the band, Jerry Lackey, of South Bend.
The concert continues with an Edwin Franko Goldman march "On Guard", followed by Dr. David Ratijik’s Clarinet solo, "Concertino for Clarinet," by Franz Krommer, transcribed for Band by Timothy Topolewski. The concert concludes with a George Kenny march "Colorburst March." The concerts are free to the public and are held at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m., at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell across from the Whitcomb in downtown St. Joseph. |
